Infosvyaz Foundation Expert Takes Part in BRICS Civil Council Health Working Group Meeting
An expert from the Infosvyaz Foundation participated in a meeting of the BRICS Civil Council Health Working Group held on May 20, 2025, at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow. The meeting focused on the theme "BRICS and the Development of Global Health Governance" and brought together civil society representatives and health experts from BRICS countries.
The Infosvyaz Foundation was represented by its Deputy Director, Irina Kostetskaya. The session was dedicated to reviewing proposals put forward by the Brazilian presidency for inclusion in the Health Working Group’s recommendations to BRICS leaders.
Participants discussed Brazil’s priorities in the health sector and exchanged views on the role of civil society in promoting equity and resilience in healthcare systems. While the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare has been identified as a priority under Brazil’s BRICS presidency, participants noted that this issue requires further attention. They proposed the establishment of an international repository of anonymized medical data to support high-quality machine learning and the responsible use of AI in healthcare applications and medical technologies.
Discussions also addressed the broader concept of the social determinants of health. Participants emphasized the importance of disease prevention and biological determinants of health alongside social factors. Key issues raised included reducing the global burden of disease, expanding universal access to healthcare, strengthening mental health services, preventing substance abuse, improving occupational health and safety, and promoting equality and inclusion.
Another focus of the meeting was the exchange of best practices in healthcare delivery and health promotion. Participants highlighted the value of corporate and municipal health programs, particularly for older populations, and discussed voluntary workplace health initiatives in sectors facing workforce shortages. The role of digital platforms, telemedicine, and AI in expanding access to healthcare services—especially in remote areas—was also underscored.
The discussion will continue at a forthcoming expanded meeting of the Health Working Group, with proposals from the Russian delegation to be consolidated and submitted to the Brazilian presidency. The outcomes are expected to contribute to the development of joint BRICS recommendations on global health governance.
